18. Mirror World

As I was dragged into the shadow, I didn’t go willing and resisted the entire time.

When the transition completed, my eyes snapped open as I finally emerged from what felt like an ocean of oil. That vast, unending blackness, the sensation of everything and all enveloping me, ceased abruptly as I felt my lungs on the verge of collapse. The ordeal was over, but the haunting experience lingered as I gasped for air.

"What in the world do you think you're doing?" I demanded of the blue screen, and the [Architect] behind it, though no response came. It didn't really matter; my mind was already racing beyond that issue. "Do you really think you can just throw me into... whatever this is supposed to be, without any consequences?"

The blue box blinking in my vision labeled it a [Rank-Up Challenge], with the objective being to survive my own death. An odd goal, but at least this time I could comprehend it.

As for my current location... the street seemed vaguely familiar, but it took a few extra seconds for the realization to dawn on me. The orange sky, heavy with smoke and distant fires, had masked the truth.

But as I squinted and extended my senses, I recognized it. The skyscraper that housed the Hunters' Association, a place I had frequented countless times in recent months.

I was back in the city.

Yet, it was a city in ruins. The street was cluttered with debris, wrecked cars, all torn apart and heaped into chaotic mounds of varying heights. Upon closer inspection, I could discern bodies among the wreckage, some still recognizably human, others... not so much.

And then, spotting a broken trident, copper and fractured in the middle, it hit me.

"Triton's invasion," I whispered to myself. Summoning Timor from my shadow, the drake lifted me higher, granting a broader view of the city. The devastation wasn't confined to the nearby area; it was widespread. The extent of the damage, the sheer scale of death, and the absence of any signs of life were overwhelming. "How could this have happened?"

The scene before me was far different to the city I knew, a city once bustling with life now reduced to a desolate wasteland. The realization of being thrown into this twisted version of reality, a simulation of one of the darkest moments in our history, weighed heavily on me. But I knew I had to push through, to confront whatever this [Rank-Up Challenge] had in store. The stakes were high, and failure was not an option.

I knew this wasn't real, that it was just a challenge created by the [System] to test me. It felt uncomfortably close to a reality I feared.

A reality where I had failed, where others had perished, where they had been left to defend this place alone. And then, one thought clung to my mind, refusing to let go.

Sara. Sara was on my mind.

Driven by this thought, I had Timor change our course from the dock towards the location of the restaurant.
